By the mid-1800’s, fine sewing tools made of precious metals, some bedazzled & bejeweled, were made available to satisfy both utility and fashion. Among the offerings were needle cases, measuring tapes, thimble holders & scissors holders and all manner of “necessaires” (kaleidoscopes, magnifying lenses, perfume vials) numbering in the hundreds could be found. Chatelaines, brooches and neck chains were decoratively designed to hold these items and as fashion would dictate, became quite prestigious in their own right.
